TATTOO REMOVAL: HOW DOES IT WORK?
Laser Tattoo Removal:
Using a highly effective pigment removal laser to target the ink trapped in the skin. The laser breaks up particles of pigment into tiny pieces that are then absorbed by the body and flushed out by the lymphatic and immune system. Multiple treatments spaced 8-12 weeks apart are usually required.
The same procedure as removal but fewer treatments are required. Facilitates a much easier and more effective cover-up to be done. Don’t be limited by your old work.
State of the Art Cooling System:
Second Skin was the first tattoo removal provider in Edmonton to use Zimmer Cryo 6 cooling system which maximizes patient comfort while minimizing side effects. The Zimmer Cryo 6 cooling system minimizes pain and thermal injury during laser treatments by providing cooling relief before, during and after the treatment. If your tattoo removal provider is not offering a cold air solution as part of the process, you are missing a critical part of the puzzle.
TATTOO REMOVAL PRICING
Prices range from as little as $50 to $500 per treatment with average treatments being $100-$200 per treatment.
We are happy to give you an estimate per treatment based on a photo you send us, but a firm price per treatment will be given during the initial free consultation process. We base our pricing on the size of the treatment area and on a per treatment basis.
It is impossible to predetermine how many treatments will be required as every tattoo is different and each one will have its own individual response to treatments.
There are two parts to tattoo removal; 1. We laser the area to break apart the ink into smaller particles. 2. Your body then digests the ink over weeks and months. It is really dependent on how your body processes the ink and that isn't something we can predict.
That price will never go up during the length of the treatments and often may go down as the treatments proceed and the tattoo disappears.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TATTOO REMOVAL
HOW DOES LASER TATTOO REMOVAL WORK?
The laser is actually looking for colour, not ink. When it sees it’s target, the colour in the tattoo, it breaks the ink pigment up into tiny particles. Your body’s lymphatic and immune system then work to flush the particles out of your system. The fading process then works for up to 8 weeks after the treatment.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL BE REQUIRED?
Because it is your body that is doing the work, we can't predict how many treatments your tattoo will take. Every tattoo and every person has a unique response to the laser, so what we look for is progress after each treatment spacing them 8 weeks apart.
The number of treatments depends on the tattoo itself. There a number of factors that come into play, the three main ones being age of the tattoo, colours involved and how the ink was put in the skin. Generally, older tattoos are easier to remove than fresh ones. Darker tattoos, particularly black, blue, green and red are the easiest to fade with purples, oranges, browns requiring more treatments. White and colours mixed with white, like pink, can be problematic as well. Line work usually takes longer than shading and professionally done tattoos require more treatments than homemade ones. Tattoo fading for a cover-up generally happens much faster than complete removal.
HOW MUCH TIME BETWEEN TREATMENTS?
We recommend a minimum of 8 weeks between treatments. The skin usually heals visibly in the first 2 weeks, with some exceptions. For darker skin types or certain colours of ink, we recommend 12 weeks between treatments.
If you are planning a cover-up, we recommend 4 months after the final laser treatment before the area is tattooed again.
HOW DOES THE QUANTA Q-PLUS C COMPARE TO THE NEW PICOSECOND TECHNOLOGY?
"...the published literature and our preliminary results seem to indicate that current “picosecond” lasers are not expected to have a significantly better tattoo clearance effect in comparison with the “gold standard” Q-switched nanosecond tattoo lasers. Taking into account also the current technology limitations of picosecond lasers, it is our opinion that top-of-the-line Q-switched nanosecond lasers will remain the devices of choice for tattoo removal."

DOES IT HURT?
There is some discomfort involved. Pulses of energy are literally breaking up the pigment in the tattoo. You will feel a burning sensation as this happens. We use the latest in cooling technology to help manage the pain. We will cool your skin before the treatment and as the treatment is happening. This accomplishes two things. Very effective pain management and a lessening of possible side effects due to the heat transmitted into your skin. Most clients report that the pain they were anticipating was far greater than the actual experience. Topical anesthetics such as Zensa cream can also be used to reduce the discomfort involved.
DO YOU SELL NUMBING CREAM?
Yes. We sell Zensa which needs to applied 90 minutes prior to treatment and can make it more manageable.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE AFFECTS?
Generally speaking, the risk of scarring is very low, but it is always possible. We will do some screening ahead of time to determine if you are susceptible to scarring but it is sometimes impossible to predict.
The treatment heats up the ink inside the skin, sometimes leading to redness, bruising, swelling and possibly blistering. Specific aftercare instructions will be given to you and if followed there shouldn’t be any issues with infection but that is small risk as well.
Hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation, a darkening or lightening of the skin in the area being treated, may occur however this is usually temporary.
WHAT CAN I DO TO PREPARE AND WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTERWARDS?
You can read our full pre/post care instructions on this page.
Prior to your laser tattoo removal treatment, please avoid the following:
Direct sun exposure or sun tanning booths for 21 days, or more, prior to treatment
Use of sunless tanning creams for 5-7 days prior to treatment
Use of tattoo "fading creams" for 4-6 weeks prior to treatment
INTRODUCING THE Q PLUS EVO, THE NEW GENERATION OF LASER TECHNOLOGY
FROM QUANTA AESTHETIC LASERS
The Evo series provides much higher performances when compared to other Q-switched lasers on the market. The Q-Plus Evo Series is the most powerful Q-switched laser platform which combines all in one unit a Nd:Yag @ 1064 / 532 nm and a Ruby @ 694 nm: three wavelengths which, with the highest achievable fluency, efficiently target all tattoo colors and pigmented lesions. Green, red, blue and black pigments can be removed effectively and quickly, thanks to the high power, big spot size and the high repetition rate.
When comparing the Evo Series from Quanta with the other relevant players present today on the market, i.e. Candela and Hoya Conbio, there is no doubt that the Quanta laser is superior in its global specifications.
Although recently Candela has improved the energy of its AlexTriVantage @ 755 nm from 700 to 800 mJ per pulse, and Hoya has introduced its Revlite which includes dyes, Quanta takes to the market the unique advantage of working with three very stable wavelengths, wider spot sizes, being its pulses highly energetic. Quanta, additionally, does not use dye lasers, which are characterized by a lower fluency and which usually deteriorate with time.
The art of tattooing has evolved a great deal over the last twenty years and so have the expectations of your clientele.
People are coming in for bigger, more complex, more sophisticated tattoo work than ever before and they want perfection. Often they may have some pre-existing work that they are wanting to go over and the dilemma then becomes about how to incorporate the previous work or cover it up without sacrificing the integrity of the new piece.
With the help of the laser, the conversation can be about the tattoo the client wants, rather than a conversation about the tattoo the client has to get. A few treatments with the laser, usually one to four, will open up enough space that you, the artist, can work with your original vision and ultimately end with a more successful tattoo and a more satisfied client.
For tattoo fading, we want to space treatments 8 weeks apart and then leave 4 months before the new tattoo is started.
